A Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) is computer software that processes, saves, and organises data from medical processes and tests at all stages. Laboratory information systems are used by physicians and lab personnel to organise a wide range of inpatient and outpatient medical testing, including haematology, chemistry, immunology, and microbiology. Patient check-in, order entry, specimen processing, result entry, and patient demographics are all frequent components of basic laboratory information systems. During a lab visit, a LIS records and retains clinical details about a patient, which it then maintains in its database for future reference.

A Laboratory nformation management system (LIMS) is a closely similar technology to Laboratory Information Systems , however there are some variations between the two software kinds. A clinical data management system is known as a LIS. An LIMS, on the other hand, can be used in both medical and non-medical environments, such as environmental testing laboratories, pharmaceutical laboratories, and water treatment plants. An LIMS saves and organises recorded data, as well as providing reports from that data, and can be used as a Web tool or installed on a personal computer or device.

With the implementation of the meaningful use programme, maintaining laboratory information systems became even more important. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services oversees the programme, which is divided into three stages: stage 1, stage 2, and stage 3. Participants who successfully demonstrate that their electronic health record (EHR) systems or EHR modules, such as a LIS, meet programme criteria are eligible for incentive payments. An LIS is defined as an EHR module if it has been evaluated and certified to meet meaningful use criteria or other health IT certification standards.
